ShambleMetrics: Betting Picks and Preview (W7 2017)

Format: Each betting line is assigned a star (★) rating. For the purposes of ROI calculation, each star corresponds to a single unit.

Week 6: 2-1-0 (OVR: 10-6-1 / +8.15 units / +15.00% ROI)

Favorite Lines and ShambleMetrics:

Indy Eleven to win (-125, ): This fixture couldn't come at a better time for the win-starved Eleven. FC Edmonton is a team in free fall; their identity as a physical defensive powerhouse all but gone.

Since the departure of Lance Laing following the 2015 season, FCE's goals per game average has fallen from 1.37 (2015), to 0.78 (2016), and now to 0.60 (2017, through five games).

Unfortunately for Colin Miller, the Eddie's saving grace from a season ago (one of the greatest season-long defensive performances in American soccer history) has also evaporated. Despite keeping a majority of their defensive roster intact, Edmonton has already conceded 38% (8 goals) of their entire goals against tally (21) from 2016. Ouch.

Unless Miller convinces Real Salt Lake to loan them Matt Van Oekel, expect Indy's draw streak to stop here.

New York Cosmos Draw No Bet (-160, ): New York has yet to look convincing, but the league-leading Armada have yet to best anyone but the hapless Eddies. I'll continue to be skeptical until they do.

It's difficult to imagine the Cosmos leave Jacksonville with anything less than a point.

Carolina Railhawks to win (-105, ): It's still early, but the Railhawks are showing significant signs of growth in 2017. As the team with the highest road loss percentage a season ago, earning four points from back-to-back road games -- and against quality opposition (Miami and Puerto Rico) -- is a massive step forward.

Flashes of brilliance followed by inexplicable letdowns have been a hallmark of the Colin Clarke era in Carolina, however. Dispatching a talented Deltas squad -- even one which hasn't found the net in over 270 minutes -- would prove NCFC are a title threat. I like their chances.

ShambleMetrics: Betting Picks and Preview (W5 2017)

Format: Each betting line is assigned a star (★) rating. For the purposes of ROI calculation, each star corresponds to a single unit.

Week 3: 2-2-0 (OVR: 8-3-1 / +11.73 units / +31.69% ROI)

Favorite Lines and ShambleMetrics:

Miami FC to win (-130, ): Finding any kind of consistency continues to be a struggle for Carolina -- showcased once again by being on both sides of a 3-1 result in back-to-back weeks.

No team lost more on the road in 2016 than Carolina (68.75%), and a rested Miami squad should prove too much to handle. We successfully faded NCFC away from home against the Deltas, and we'll do so again here.

New York Cosmos -1 (-115, ): While I'd love to see Jacksonville's surprising start continue, expect this week to be a harsh reality check. It's tough to fault a team with three clean sheets in as many games, and the Armada defense might even be good enough to keep them off the bottom of the table (though I have my doubts) -- but they offer very little in the final third.

Until they score a goal that isn't gifted to them by the free-falling Eddies, I'll continue to be skeptical.

ShambleMetrics: Betting Picks and Preview (W3 2017)

Format: Each betting line is assigned a star (★) rating. For the purposes of ROI calculation, each star corresponds to a single unit.

Week 2: 3-1-0 (OVR: 6-1-1 / +11.43 units / +49.68% ROI)

Favorite Lines and ShambleMetrics:

FC Edmonton vs Jacksonville Armada - Under 2.5 Goals (-140, ): Deja vu.

With an extremely high number of weekly rematches, the NASL schedule presents its teams (and us) with a unique challenge in 2017. These back-to-back replays are, in my opinion, the most difficult type of games to predict in soccer.

Not only is it easy to fall victim to simply overvaluing the previous week's result, but there are a large number of intangible variables which can have a much larger role than they usually would. Individual and team tactical flexibility and adaptability impacting these fixtures may be obvious, but even something as simple as the ability to effectively get under your opponent's skin (I would expect to see an above-average number of cards this weekend) can -- and often will -- change the result.

In weeks like this -- particularly early in the season where our sample size is still so small -- finding a constant is key.

Including last week, 27 of Edmonton's previous 32 matches have finished under 2.5 goals. Ride the wave. I strongly believe First Half Draw (+110, ★) to be worth a play as well.

Miami FC vs New York Cosmos - Both Teams to Score (-150), ): After successfully fading the Cosmos in the first two weeks of the season, we'll be relying on them to at least find the net in this one -- something they've failed to do thus far in 2017. Their opponent's net, anyway.

Placing this much confidence in a team with more own goals (1) than shots on target (0) might be toeing the edge of the gambler's fallacy ("they're due for it!"), but Gio Savarese is still one of the best coaches in North America. If nothing else, have faith in his ability to make effective adjustments. Even if they fail to get a result, expect them to put up a much better fight.

San Francisco Deltas to Win (-110, ): I said before the season opener that sleeping on Marc Dos Santos and the Deltas would be a mistake. Here's where I put my (proverbial) money where my mouth was.

No team in the league lost more games on the road in 2016 than Carolina (68.75%). While their attack looks superb on paper, finishing problems plagued them against Miami. Defensive inconsistency appears to still be an issue as well.

ShambleMetrics: Betting Picks and Preview (W2 2017)

Format: Each betting line is assigned a star (★) rating. For the purposes of ROI calculation, each star corresponds to a single unit.

Week 1: 3-0-1 (W-L-P) / +6.47 units / +53.93% ROI)

Favorite Lines and ShambleMetrics:

Jacksonville Armada vs. FC Edmonton Under 2.5 Goals (-108), ): Few teams in any league have seen a single consistent betting strategy be as profitable as FC Edmonton and the under were in 2016. Led by Golden Glove winner Matt Van Oekel (now starting for Real Salt Lake of MLS), FCE saw an incredible 26 of 32 (81.25%) matches end with two goals or fewer. The percentage grew even higher (87.5%) when away from home.

It's unrealistic to expect this level of defensive dominance (paired with relative offensive ineptitude) again in 2017, but Colin Miller loves a clean sheet. Chris Konopka is a very suitable replacement for Van Oekel at this level (and boasts a similarly-monstrous wingspan), while the central duo of Albert Watson and Pape Diakite will continue to be the bedrock of a team with playoff aspirations.

FC Edmonton Draw No Bet (-110, ): Shifting to the other side of the story, the Jacksonville Armada are beginning a campaign which many believe -- myself included -- will be a season-long struggle to escape the bottom of the table. Nothing will come easy for the league-owned team moving to a new stadium with a subpar roster (all while wearing sponsorless white t-shirts).

There's no reason to believe the Armada start the season with anything better than a point. FC Edmonton may not have enough to win outright, but I see very little risk in this play.

Miami FC Win/Draw Double Chance (-110, ): Fading the Cosmos for a second week in a row (and this time in New York) is likely playing with fire, but I will continue to believe in the quality of Miami's roster -- several moments of precarious defensive play in their opener notwithstanding.

New York's home record is well known: Gio Savarese has his team riding the longest home unbeaten streak in NASL history. Even so, I have to love this value on a double chance line for a team I believe to have an MLS-caliber midfield, a team I (and many) believe to be the title favorites in 2017, and a team which has a very reliable track record on the road.

Miami's loss percentage in 2016 (37.5%) was bettered only by Rayo OKC.

Indy Eleven vs Puerto Rico FC Draw (+345, )Obviously not the result I want in this one, but these picks must go where the value dictates.

This line is blatantly disrespectful to a Puerto Rico side which finished with the 5th-highest draw percentage on the road in 2016 (36.36%), despite being at an obvious disadvantage by starting play midseason. Adrian Whitbread's squad were also in the top-half of the league in road points earned per game (0.91), and won or drew 54.55% of their games away from home (6th in the NASL).

Indy's form at The Mike was otherworldly last season, and there's little reason to believe they'll fall off too drastically in 2017 (though matching perfection may be unrealistic) -- but nobody should be surprised if this match played out very similarly to the Eleven's home opener a year ago.

ShambleMetrics: Betting Picks and Preview (Week 1 2017)

Format: Each betting line is assigned a star (★) rating. For the purposes of ROI calculation, each star corresponds to a single unit.

2016 Results: 70-54-8 OVR / +14.14 units / +4.92% ROI)

Favorite Lines and ShambleMetrics:

Miami FC Draw No Bet (+125, ). I was burned in the opener last season by picking pre-season hype (Minnesota at the time) over the Railhawks NCFC at Wake Med. Here's to hoping history doesn't repeat itself.

Miami's roster is simply too good to pass on this amount of value in a Draw No Bet line. The additions of Michel (who I believe to be the best offseason signing in the league), Dylan Mares, and Stefano Pinho turned an already solid roster into one which is utterly terrifying. I would even go as far as to say Miami's midfield is better than several in MLS.

No team scored more goals on the road in 2016 than Miami FC (1.38), with Nesta's squad being particularly prolific in the first half (0.75 goals per game, also a league-leading metric). Carolina, conversely, led the league in first-half goals conceded at home (0.56). Miami to score first (line not available at the time of publication) could also be an intriguing play if the value is right.

San Francisco Deltas vs Indy Eleven Under 2.5 (-105, ): Since 2014, six teams have joined the NASL as expansion sides. Only one (Jacksonville) earned all three points in their initial outing. Given this, I also think there's still value to be had in Indy Eleven Win/Draw Double Chance (-160, ). If you're looking for a higher-risk/higher-reward play, it's hard not to like the Draw result at +235.

The Deltas are a team which shouldn't be slept on this season, however. A very talented roster led by a very talented coach (both of which boast a wealth of NASL experience and success) will give the Bay Area plenty to be excited about.

It's no secret the Eleven struggled on the road last season. Hankinson's men -- most of whom have returned in 2017 -- boasted the second-lowest winning percentage away from home (12.5%), as well as the highest road draw percentage (43.75%).

Indy also kept their road games low-scoring: averaging 2.06 combined goals per game. Only Rayo OKC (1.69, may they rest in peace) and FC Edmonton (1.31) had lower average totals. It's also worth noting that Indy's total is even lower if we disregard road results where backup keeper Keith Cardona was given game time (eight total goals in two games).

Puerto Rico FC Win/Draw Double Chance (-115, ):

Here's where I go against the 2016 numbers a bit. PRFC's losing percentage at home was the fourth-highest in the NASL last season (27.27%), while the Cosmos tied OKC for the highest road winning percentage (37.5%).

It's important to note, however, that Puerto Rico had a much smaller sample for these metrics due to missing the Spring season. Even more importantly is that they were undefeated at home in their final six games (2W 4D).

Both teams have seen their fair share of roster changes while still keeping a solid core from 2016, and the Cosmos are admittedly known for their fast starts -- but I fully expect Bayamon to be a tough trip for any team in the league this year.

The Championship Semifinal: Predictions, ShambleMetrics, and Caleb's favorite betting lines

Format: Each betting line is assigned a star (★) rating. For the purposes of ROI calculation, each star corresponds to a single unit.

Final Week Results: 1-1-0 (68-52-8 OVR / +5.77% ROI / +16.14 units)

Favorite Lines:

Indy Eleven to win (-110, ): Invincible at home. Untouchable in the biggest games. Spurred on by 10,000 of the loudest fans in the NASL.

For more, check out our in-depth preview of the most important match in Indy Eleven history.

Rayo OKC +1 (-150, ): Rayo OKC was one of only two teams (FC Edmonton) to earn a point in New York in 2016. They led the league in away points per game (1.44), and had the lowest road losing percentage (31.25%). They also enter this game unbeaten in 10, and ended the season with a positive goal differential against the Cosmos (4-2) -- the only team to do so while playing in New York twice.

This line is simply disrespectful. Almost as disrespectful as PRO assigning the referee who gave OKC three red cards in this fixture earlier in the season.

NASL Semifinal Preview: Indy Versus Edmonton, Finally

Indy Eleven look to extend their home dominance to The Championship.

By: Brandon Cockrum

Can anything new be written about Indy Eleven and their journey to The Championship? Tens of thousands of words from this blog and other sources have documented the Eleven’s journey from overwhelming local support despite two disappointing seasons to an offseason overhaul and their current status as a strong number two seed in the league playoffs.

Supporters of the club have been handsomely rewarded this year for their loyalty and exuberance by a squad that has delivered significantly more peaks than valleys, and even a few iconic moments. The Championship presents an opportunity for the Eleven to deliver a final prize to the fans in 2016 as well as a chance for the club to entrench itself as one of the most successful lower-division clubs, off and on the field.

Across the border in Canada, after coming close to making the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, FC Edmonton identified two areas that they could improve upon in 2016 to ensure that their squad would not fall short for a third consecutive year. First, the club traveled to Glasgow, Scotland for preseason training, which allowed the team to bond, put players in a soccer-first atmosphere and helped the squad be competitive from kickoff in match week one. Second, as the NASL’s most distantly-located franchise, the team began traveling one day earlier to away matches in effort to lessen the impact of travel upon their matches and to acclimate themselves to the climate of their opponent.

These initiatives worked and when paired with their traditional stonewall defense the Eddies were able to maintain pace with the league leaders, qualifying easily for the playoffs. For FC Edmonton, The Championship represents an opportunity to cement themselves as a dominant force on the pitch and, maybe most importantly, inspire a fan base that has been slow to reach critical mass but that is crucial to their long-term success.

INDvFCE Series

All-time: FC Edmonton 4 wins, Indy Eleven 3 wins, 2 draws
Season: 1-1-1

May 7 in Indianapolis, IND 1 - FCE 1:
Both teams were able to find the back of the net once in the first half of a week five matchup but the quality chances were few and far between. Center back Greg Janicki opened the scoring with a goal off a set piece and fifteen minutes later the Eddies pulled even with a counter attack goal from the head of Jake Keegan. The 90 minutes was devoid of many quality chances and primarily a goalkeeping clinic with Indy’s Jon Busch and Edmonton’s Matt Van Oekel snuffing out anything that made it past their defense.   // Highlights: https://youtu.be/ptSo5S7RWGg

July 23 in Indianapolis, IND 1 - FCE 0:
Visiting the Eleven on a hot July evening and minus their boss starting center backs, Albert Watson and Papa Diakite, FC Edmonton was expected to sit back, conserve energy and absorb pressure for 90 minutes. After conceding a 13th minute goal to Indy’s Greg Janicki, the Eddies were forced to attack. The visitors nearly evened the score twice in the mid-part of the first half and Edmonton goalkeeper Matt Van Oekel made a number of fine saves to keep his club in the match until the end. The summer heat took its toll on both teams but Edmonton had enough in the tank to test Indy until the final whistle. Two near goal-line saves from Indy midfielder Brad Ring (one on a corner-kick header from goalie Van Oekel) sealed the victory for Indy.   // Highlights:  https://youtu.be/yvlENJVX-5s

Oct. 2 in Edmonton, IND 1 - FCE 2:
This late season battle in Edmonton featured two healthy squads going toe-to-toe for second place in the standings. The opening half featured numerous quality chances for both clubs to score but entered halftime 0-0. In the second half, Éamon Zayed struck first for the visitors with a 56th minute goal. Indy missed opportunities to double their lead before Diakite evened up the match in the 80th minute with a fine volley off of a ping-ponged corner kick that fell to his feet. Just as it looked that both sides would leave the pitch with one point, Edmonton’s Ben Fisk found the game winner through a counter attack in the 94th minute.   // Highlights: https://youtu.be/Qj7XQcmrvRg

Greg Janicki has scored 2 of Indy's 3 goals against Edmonton in 2016.

Team Results

FC Edmonton
Season: 15-8-9 // 25 Goals For (0.78 /game), 21 Goals Allowed (0.70 /game), 16 Shutouts
Road: 3-6-7 // Have not won a road match since August 20
Last 10: 3-3-4 // 5 GF, 7 GA

Key Trend: Eight (32%) of their 25 goals came from headers and only one goal was scored from outside of penalty box.

Indy Eleven
Season: 15-10-7 // 51 GF (1.59 /game) , 33 GA (1.03/game), 11 shutouts
Home: 13-3-0 // 4-1-0 with 12 GF and 2 GA in last five home matches
Last 10: 5-2-3 // 17 GF, 10 GA

Key Trend: 5-1-1 (15 GF, 5 GA) record in fall season with attacking midfielder Siniša Ubiparipović in the starting lineup.

Projected Lineups

FC Edmonton // 4-1-4-1 (R to L)
Van Oekel
Nicklaw - Diakite - Watson - Eckersley
Ledgerwood
Keegan - Shome - Fordyce -  Nyassi
Ameobi

Key Stats:
GK Matt Van Oekel // 0.55 Goals Against Average
MF Daryl Fordyce // 7 Goals, 3 Assists
MF/FW Jake Keegan // 5 G
FW Tomi Ameobi  // 2 G (7 G in 2015)

Captain Albert Watson will lead FC Edmonton into battle.

Indy Eleven // 4-4-2 Diamond
Busch
Palmer - Falvey - Janicki - Vukovic
Smart - Ring - Ubiparipović - Mares
Braun - Zayed

Key Stats:
GK Jon Busch // 0.93 GAA
FW Eamon Zayed // 15 G, 6 A
FW Justin Braun // 8 G , 5 A
MF Dylan Mares // 5 G, 6 A

Indy’s starting lineup is a known entity and only the defensive midfield and right back starters are debatable. At defensive midfielder we are tabbing Brad Ring to start over Gerardo Torrado because the latter has missed a few recent matches due to injury and the lineup with Ring has shown great consistency in that time. A 60th minute substitution of Torrado for Ring (or vice versa if Torrado starts) would be a good bet. At right back we believe Lovel Palmer will start rather than Marco Franco because of the experience that Palmer and goalkeeper Jon Busch have from a few seasons playing together. Franco is superior when Indy has possession but Palmer’s size and strength could be important on set pieces, and his almost telepathic way of communicating with goalkeeper Busch seems to help the defense coalesce.

Bloody Shambles Staff Predictions

Key player for Edmonton
Brandon Cockrum: Matt Van Oekel. Edmonton’s goalie is on the short list for player of the year and proved why in his three previous matches against the Eleven. Van Oekel was a difference maker in each match, making difficult saves that kept his club in the games. The Eleven will assuredly get their chances on goal and Van Oekel may need to keep all of them out for his team to emerge victorious.

James Cormack:
FC Edmonton have great difficulties scoring lately and I expect a similar scenario for them on Saturday. They are going to need a top performance from a playmaker; the fact Sainey Nyassi only has four assists in 2016 and is their leading player in that statistic says it all, but most likely it will require a big game from Nyassi or possibly Daryl Fordyce.

Caleb Ramp: Matt Van Oekel. 0.55 GAA, enough said.

Key player for Indy
Brandon Cockrum: Éamon Zayed. The Irish striker lives for the big moment and may be the most clutch player in the league. In many of Indy’s biggest matches this season Zayed has found the net, most memorably in defining victories over New York and Carolina. He has the size to battle with Edmonton’s tough center backs and his positioning and awareness frequently puts him in the right place at the right time. With Zayed’s guile, just three shots on goal could add another chapter to his legend as a hat-trick hero.

James Cormack: It's hard to pick just one, but it will be someone in the midfield that can help open up the Edmonton back line. Ubiparipović, I feel could be the guy that is going to find the key pass to put attackers through, and Dylan Mares will also be very important doing the same or putting the ball in the net.

Siniša Ubiparipović has sparked the Indy offense with his re-emergence this Fall.

Caleb Ramp: Greg Janicki. Execution of set pieces - on both sides of the ball - are going to decide this match. There's a reason Greg scored two of Indy's three regular season goals against the Eddies. Honorable mention: Brad Ring. Brad's mobility and bulldog mentality will be crucial in shutting down Edmonton's counter attacking opportunities as they arise. If Ring doesn't start, Indy's likelihood of winning drops drastically.

Edmonton can win if…
Brandon Cockrum: The Edmonton defense has been the best in the league this season and their back five are among the top performers at their positions. While their attack would never be described as “strong” it has been capable of manufacturing enough goals to secure victories. The Eddies can win if Van Oekel stonewalls Indy for a full match and their offense can take advantage of Indy’s susceptibility to counter attacks on the wings. This team is used to winning matches late (maybe even more than Indy), so another goal in the games waning moments could propel them into the final.

James Cormack:

If they can sign Lionel Messi maybe? Scoring is a big issue for them and if Indy Eleven plays with their big game mentality it is hard to see where the Eddies' goals will come from against this team at home. Holding Indy to 0-0 and winning on penalties might work, and would also be very painful to watch.

Caleb Ramp: Van Oekel is on his game, and the Eddies can force extra time and penalties. If this game goes the distance, Edmonton immediately flips from the underdog to a heavy favorite. 6'4" Van Oekel vs. 5'9" Jon Busch is not a shootout matchup the Eleven want to see.

Indy can win if…
Brandon Cockrum: Indy has a quality defense as well but their offense has driven the team's success. At home this season, Indy has reliably scored at least two goals and allowed one or fewer. If the Eleven can execute the game plan, limit Edmonton's clean shots on goal and stay focused until the final whistle they should emerge victorious.

James Cormack:

Indy needs to bring their big game mentality and I expect that they will, like they did against Carolina to win the spring. As we saw in the road game at Edmonton, any falling asleep or switching off is costly, but if everyone is on the same page for 90 minutes they will win.

Caleb Ramp: Coach Hankinson pours it on early. The longer the match goes without a goal, the more likely it is that Indy can be beaten by one perfectly-executed counter-attack. The Eddies have thrived by keeping a match scoreless in the first half, and closing it out in the second. Indy can't allow that to happen.

Who will win and how?
Brandon Cockrum: Indy will win. The Eleven scored first in the three previous matches and I expect they will do the same this Saturday. Look for a midfielder to feed Zayed for a goal. If Edmonton is able to even the match, the Eleven will be spurred on by the Brickyard Battalion to find a match winner, possibly in extra time.

James Cormack: Indy Eleven will win. I do not see this game going over 90 minutes, as Indy's home form is what sets them apart. If the Eleven get one goal they will win, and they may get more, but as long as they get one and shut them out they’ll be fine. Indy, players and supporters, will have to be patient.

Caleb Ramp: Eleven will win 2-1. In the latter half of the season, Indy has repeatedly shown the ability to be lethal when given the bulk of possession at home -- something the Eddies will likely cede. The Eleven will first find the net toward the end of the first half, then double their lead near the 55-60th minute via a Don Smart counterattack. The Eddies will bring one back 10-15 minutes later (leading to a nervy final few minutes), but the Indy defense will ultimately withstand a terrifying set piece onslaught late.

Who will meet in the NASL final?
Brandon Cockrum: My heart and eyes want to witness a league final between Rayo OKC and Indy at Carroll stadium. My gut tells me that Indy will be traveling to New York City next weekend to face the Cosmos in an intimate environment for the coveted Soccer Bowl.

NASL's Soccer Bowl Trophy

James Cormack:

I actually have a feeling it will be Indy Eleven and Rayo OKC. Rayo have proved they can handle pressure games and have played well against NYC this year; if they can score first I think they can progress.

Caleb Ramp: Indy Eleven and Rayo OKC. Rayo enters the semifinals with the longest unbeaten streak of the four playoff teams. They were statistically the best road team in the NASL in 2016, and are one of only two teams (FC Edmonton) to earn a point in New York. Moreover, OKC is one of only three clubs (along with Indy Eleven and FC Edmonton) to finish the season with a positive aggregate goal differential vs. the Cosmos (4-2) - and the only team to do so while having to play in New York twice.

Regular Season Finale: Predictions, ShambleMetrics, and Caleb's favorite betting lines

Format: Each betting line is assigned a star (★) rating. For the purposes of ROI calculation, each star corresponds to a single unit.

Week 28 Results: 2-1-0 (68-52-8 OVR / +5.17% ROI / +14.14 units)

Favorite Lines:

New York Cosmos Draw No Bet (+100, ): Despite early-season road struggles, the Cosmos have only lost one match away from home since July (a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of the Eleven). Minnesota, meanwhile, have only won two of their last 12 overall.

It's worth keeping an eye on the squad Gio Savarese decides to roll with, but meaningless match or not, it's hard not to love the value in the Cosmos here.

Rayo OKC vs Indy Eleven Under 2.5 Goals (-115, ): It's important to preface this pick with the recognition that the importance of this game will entirely hinge on the result of Minnesota/New York on Saturday. If Minnesota fails to defeat the Cosmos, Rayo automatically earns the fourth playoff spot and will face New York in the semifinals. If Minnesota were to win, Rayo would still only need a draw to secure the fourth spot.

With that in mind, Rayo is riding a nine game unbeaten streak, with seven of those matches finishing under the 2.5 mark. Expect both teams to go into this game with the primary focus of staying healthy, keeping a clean sheet, and preparing for November 5th.
