Indy Eleven is holding out for a hero in their backline

Falvey was available for last Saturday's match against Puerto Rico
By: Brian Cook

If you watched Saturday's draw with Puerto Rico FC you witnessed what can only be described as the best and worst portions of soccer. You saw a high scoring game but for Indy Eleven fans you also saw fixable defensive mistakes. Mistakes that were the difference between an early - season defining game and one that may play a bigger role later on in the season.

Regardless of the circumstances Indy were found to be unlucky Saturday as they lost a two goal lead and barely escaped with a point to show for their efforts. While nothing should be taken away from starting lineups for both games as they were clearly the top performing players for Indy so far, the first goal given up by the Eleven put a light over the huge missing piece in Indy's defensive efforts:

Colin Falvey.

Falvey, recovering from a late off season sports hernia surgery, was on the bench Saturday. While the circumstances weren't deemed difficult enough to warrant bringing on Falvey who, as was mentioned by Hankinson during the week, fresh enough for 20 minutes or there about the defense had struggled and let Puerto Rico slam them with their attack.

The buildup to the play in question that opened the flood gates for Puerto Rico's attack involved simple almost uncontested passes and finished up with Conor Doyle putting the ball in the back of the net

The goal, while skilled, gives you a great observation of the issues presented with the current backline for the Eleven. The ball seemingly floats into the box and Watson Siriboe acts as if he is stuck in quick sand watching as Conor Doyle snaps a shot into the left corner of the net.

Again, while only two games into the 2017 season the goal is a clear sign of the issues still facing the starting eleven for Indy. Daniel Keller and Kwame Watson-Siriboe have started both game and while it's clear they had earned the start based off of the Deltas game the result last Saturday spells more about the lack of communication and skill beyond the midfield.

For comparison, 2016 saw Indy Eleven play Tampa Bay Rowdies in Florida. The game took place on September third and the backline had little depth (no real defensive substitutions were available for the game). With Keller and Falvey lining up side by side in the center it was almost like they were stretched to help out on both sides of the backline.

For clarification purposes, Daniel Keller was on the left hand side of that heat map and Falvey was next to Palmer on the right center defender portion. The heatmap can give you a good idea of not only where the players are on the field but in this case how wide they were able to cover together.

This is the heat map from the Puerto Rico game with Daniel Keller and Kwame Watson-Siriboe which shows considerably less amount of distance shared between the two but also a considerable hole between them that both Doyle and Ramos exploited:

Heatmap from IndyEleven.com

From this comparison it's more or less that Keller and Watson feel stuck and either aren't able to move out to help out or are not sure what will happen if they do. A feature of the lack of your obvious best defender and confidence boosters for other members of your backline being sidelined.

This isn't to say that Daniel Keller and the first year boy in blue Kwame Watson-Siriboe are bad players. Nor is it a fist to throw at the leadership between the sticks of Jon Busch who has had his fair share of leadership advances for Indy since joining last year but there is a difference in the eye both statistically and on the pitch when you don't have the person who ties everything together.

Going back to the play in question, a clear lack of marking which featured an astounding eight players watching as Conor Doyle placed the ball in the back of the net. Let's say that play again carries on the same way and instead of Keller or Watson you have Falvey. You may still see a shot on goal but based off of previous games and heat maps you would more than likely see a more fluid swapping of positions and communication.

You would see, perhaps, Doyle go to hit the kick and instead of Watson watching the ball fly by him he's a half a foot over closer to the center of the net and is able to stop. You might see that Keller was able to close down on Doyle before he gets the shot off. You may even see Falvey himself on the ball and able to clear it away.

Let's compare another match from 2016 which featured the highest quality centerback pairing since Indy Eleven began play. Greg Janicki's 2015 season was less than stellar which left many people confused when Hankinson chose to keep Janicki with the club heading in 2016. No one truly saw the impact that Falvey's arrival would have on Janicki's game and the partnership they formed was a huge part of 2016.

The October 22nd match between year one club Puerto Rico FC and Indy Eleven saw one of the strongest showings of Indy Eleven. Not to be outdone by the scoreline when you investigate the centerback position and the heatmap for both Janicki and Falvey you see the strength of their partnership and the depth they were able to achieve from the position.

Heatmap from IndyEleven.com

The heat maps provide incredible insight into not only how the teams layout over the course of 90 minutes but also the difference in how a back line not led by Colin Falvey performs. His insight, voice, leadership and direction was a pivitol part of the club's success in 2016. It's also clear from the San Francesco game that both Watson Siriboe and Keller are good centerback options but aren't able to lead the defense and provide depth beyond the basic skills of a centerback like Falvey is. Both players will improve with Falvey on the field. At this point it's unclear when you will see Indy Eleven's captain take the pitch in 2017 but after the match against Puerto Rico it's clear that the timetable for his return should be moved up if it can be.

San Juan, Puerto Rico FC Win Restrepo Award for Top NASL Away Day

Who's ready for a road trip to San Juan?!
By: Brandon Cockrum (@brew_wallace)

Congratulations to Puerto Rico FC and the city of San Juan for winning the first ever Top NASL Away Day! The island club is the first ever recipient of The Walter Restrepo Away Day Achievement Award.

While this is likely the only “hardware” that the expansion club will win in 2016, it’s nonetheless an accomplishment worthy of pride. In just over one month of play in the NASL, the football club, owned by pro-basketball player Carmelo Anthony, has already established itself as the most desirable city for NASL supporters to visit. The chance for soccer travelers to make a beach holiday out of the away match certainly helped San Juan's chance at winning, but the club’s supporters, stadium and match day experience were also significant features that appealed to voters.

Puerto Rico FC play their games at the Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium in Bayamón, PR. The 22,000 seat, former-baseball stadium hosts nearly 5,000 supporters of PRFC for each home match.

"When you come to Puerto Rico you come to paradise! When you come to Juan Ramón Loubriel, you'll see some of the most passionate fans in the league. Electric atmosphere! Everybody is welcome to our Island!" - @BarraNaranjaPRFC (@BarraPrfc)

More than five hundred votes were cast in the competition pitting all twelve NASL cities in a bracket-style tournament to determine the NASL's most appealing city to visit. San Juan beat out Indianapolis in the competition’s final round, with 62% of voters preferring a trip to the island territory. In previous rounds, San Juan also edged out Tampa Bay, Edmonton, and Ottawa. Indianapolis advanced to the finals with wins over New York City, Minneapolis, and Oklahoma City.

The prestigious, international award is named after professional soccer player Walter Restrepo, currently on loan to the USL’s Bethlehem Steel from MLS’ Philadelphia Union. In 2014, Restrepo was traded from the NASL’s Ft. Lauderdale Strikers to the San Antonio Scorpions for the eye-catching price of “free lodging and transportation during Fort Lauderdale’s two road trips to San Antonio in 2014.” The creative deal has been recognized as one of the most unique trades in sports. On the field, Restrepo has twice been named to the NASL’s Best XI and twice lifted the NASL’s Soccer Bowl as league champion.

Final Round: Top NASL Away Day

If you could visit any NASL city for a match, where would you go?

By: Brandon Cockrum (@brew_wallace)

After three weeks of voting we have eliminated ten cities from the Bloody Shambles Top NASL Away Day tournament and are down to our finalists.

Midwest-region winner Indianapolis topped East Coast-region champ New York, winning 63% of votes. The International-region representative, San Juan, Puerto Rico, narrowly edged the Florida-region's Tampa Bay, 51% to 49%. BloodyShambles staff were starting to develop a tie-breaking contest to determine a winner, when the deciding was vote was cast at the last minute.

Our final matchup features the club with the league's best attendance over the last three seasons, Indianapolis, against the newest member of the league, San Juan. The Midwest city, provides great tailgating and large crowds on match day, and has a growing food and culture reputation to explore in a visitor's free time. The Puerto Rican capital offers an international travel and match experience, as well as the always-popular sun and sand.

Voting for the final round will remain open for approximately three days. Voters should NOT vote for their club's home city. (If you don't want to vote against your own club, don't vote in that bracket.) Vote for the city that you would most like to visit for an away match. Criteria for casting your vote could include the opponent's match day experience and supporters culture, your desire to also visit an away city for food or culture, or any other personal travel preferences you might have. (Quality of local breweries and waterparks are key criteria for me.)

Final Four: Top NASL Away Day

If you could visit any NASL city for a match, where would you go?
By: Brew Wallace (@brew_wallace)

After two weeks of voting we have eliminated eight cities from the Bloody Shambles Top NASL Away Day tournament and are now to the final four. On one side of the bracket we have the sun and sand cities of Tampa Bay and San Juan squaring off. The other matchup features the noisy newcomer, Indianapolis, versus the Empire City, New York. While some of the results of the first round might have been predictable, anyone city could advance from this round to compete in the final.

Voting for the regional winner round will remain open for approximately four days. Voters should NOT vote for their club's home city. Instead vote for the city that you would most like to visit for an away match. (If you don't want to vote against your own team then you don't have to vote in that part of the bracket.) Criteria for casting your vote could include, but is certainly not limited to, the opponent's supporters culture, the expected match day experience, your desire to visit a city, or any other personal travel preferences you might have. (Quality of local breweries is a key criteria for me.)

With the formalities out of the way, let's get it on!

On An Island In The Sun - Puerto Rico FC V Indy Eleven PREVIEW (7/2/16)

Souleymane Youla in action against Liga MX champions CF Pachuca

By: James Cormack

Hip Hip! Okay I couldn't resist a nice Weezer reference, if you have no idea what I am talking about you are missing out on a great song.

As with any new franchise in NASL you need some hype and some promotion to get butts on seats for your first season. Puerto Rico have been leading with the catchphrase "We Are Ready!". Are they really ready though?

PRFC stole the headlines in June of 2015 when it was announced NBA star and Puerto Rican native Carmelo Anthony has bought a franchise in the NASL that will play in the summer of 2016 at
Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Bayamón, Puerto Rico.

So while the rest of the NASL have been concentrating on Spring action, what have PRFC been up to? Puerto Rico's roster currently stands at 21 with three goalkeepers. probably the most recognizable name to Indy Eleven fans would be former striker Pedro Mendes who departed the club in 2014 for Minnesota and then moved back to his former club Atlanta Silverbacks in 2015. Joining him in Puerto Rico is his twin brother and former Cosmos and Atlanta player Paulo.

The rest of the Puerto Rican roster provides a smattering of NASL and local experience, but nothing jaw dropping or eyebrow raising as we have seen with other new teams like Rayo OKC or Miami FC, there has been no huge spending nor is there anyone who could be described as a 'marquee' player.

Chris Nurse may be considered somewhat talismanic locally, he played for the original Puerto Rico Islanders in 2010 and in 2012, he returns to Puerto Rico for the third time. In between he has featured for Carolina Railhawks, Fort Lauderdale Strikers and FC Edmonton. The 32 year old midfielder from Hammersmith, London will no doubt be looked upon for experience and leadership in the fall.

In terms of NASL league experience through the rest of the roster Brazilian attacker Oliver Minatel arrrives from Ottawa Fury FC where he made 44 appearances. Fellow Brazilian 'Cristiano' Dias boasts four to five years experience with Minnesota United where he made 98 appearances for the Loons and the defender will don the captain's armband for PRFC.

Outside of that and adding a few Puerto Rican player and some internationals like Ramón Soria (Spain) and Bljedi Bardic (Montenegro). I'll be perfectly honest this roster does not in anyway give me the feeling we are looking at a squad that is going to cause any great upset in fall.

The pre season and preparations for Puerto Rico are equally obscure. As far as I can tell from club news the team has played against the Puerto Rico national team in which they won 1-0 in New York, played against Costa Rica in their preparation for Copa America (all I can tell is the game ended after 75 minutes due to a thunderstorm), and a game against US U17's (no details found, apparently USA's warmup against Puerto Rico is not the same game?).

So are Puerto Rico ready to meet the only undefeated team in the NASL and current Spring Champions Indy Eleven, I hope I am not proven wrong, but no, I don't really think they will be. Even in 2014 when Indy entered the league for the first time their preparation, even if lacking then was better than that. The most important thing for PRFC is to get started and gain experience in 2016. It is going to be tough for them, Indy Eleven found out the hard way in 2014 that this league is not to be underestimated.

Indy Eleven not letting off the gas any time soon......

Franco covering Omar Gonzalez of CF Pachuca
There has not been much of a break for Indy since Spring, three days after winning the Spring  Championship the Eleven took on Chicago Fire in the US Open Cup, despite exiting the competition on penalties, it was an impressive performance by the team, to come off a huge win against Carolina with very little rest and push Chicago for 120 minutes, no complaints from me, it was a great showing.

The squad got a break and then resumed action again on June 26th they played in exhibition against reigning Liga MX Champions CF Pachuca and thanks to a great goal from Éamon Zayed defeated them 1-0 at Carroll Stadium.

Indy will look to push on and continue where they left off but there will be a few players unavailable for the match in Puerto Rico so we will look to use our roster depth again.

Gerardo Torrado is not yet eligible for this game, he will not be able to play in competitive NASL matches until after the transfer window closes on Monday. He will be available for our next home match.

Gorka Larrea will no longer be playing for Indy, anyone who follows his instagram would know he appears to be a long way away right now, Indy Eleven picked Gorka up for Spring and it looks like his option will not be picked up for fall, so it's bon voyage to Gorky.

The benefit of winning Spring and already having a playoff berth means we have time to let injured players heal, this will be the case for Colin Falvey this week, he played through pain in Spring with a groin issue and now that is being allowed to heal, return time not yet know.

Don Smart and Jair Reinoso are still not 100% or ready for a return yet. Indy will leave nobody else behind and have just enough to make the 18 man roster for the match.

The biggest question for me is will Marco Franco keep his place, in the last three matches he has been outstanding, he had a great performance against Pachuca, Chicago and Carolina. Lovel Palmer is back and ready, but do we need to change for right now, we made the playoffs and we have opportunities to rotate players.

I'd like to see both play to be honest, but I think Franco has earned a start for this game and Lovel is a very adaptable player who can play defense and midfield so with a player like Larrea departing he will still be very important.

Also does Cardona who also had a standout performance against Pachuca get more time against an unknown team? Will be interesting to see if he starts, I would be comfortable with it but also love to see Jon Busch in goal as well.

Possible starting lineup:
Busch, Franco, Miller, Janicki, Vukovic, Mares, Ring, Paterson, Gordon, Zayed, Braun. Subs: Cardona, Palmer, Shaffer, Keller, Lacroix, Youla, Ubiparipovic

Players to watch:

Éamon Zayed, sitting atop the scoring table in NASL after a hat trick against Carolina and pulling out another one against CF Pachuca, he's a man on a mission, he told us we'd win Spring and we did, he told us he would win the Golden Boot and we believe him. This could be the perfect game for him to bump up his tally.

Souleymane Youla, whether he starts or comes on later in the game he is the new guy and he looks sharp, he will be eager to carve himself a regular starting spot but will have to earn it in this roster, a standout performance won't do any harm, expect him to give 110% and possibly score.
